2007 Small Business Day at the Capitol

Advocacy at its Best to Influence Lawmakers

The 2007 Small Business Day at the Capitol has identified three public policy concerns that dramatically impact Ohio’s economic growth. Utilize the clout you have as a small-business owner to influence these needed reforms by sharing your perspective directly with legislators and government officials.

Ohio Death Tax Repeal/Reduction
While Ohio has made many significant reforms to the state tax code, the Ohio estate or “death” tax remains a serious threat to small business in Ohio. The death tax takes about $300 million a year out of our economy and out of the hands of entrepreneurs. Take this opportunity to support meaningful changes to this anti-small-business tax.

Health Insurance Cost/Options
The rising cost of health insurance and lack of coverage options continue to be a significant problem for Ohio’s small employers. While the Legislature continues to pass new unfunded health care mandates, small employers are faced with fewer and fewer insurance options. Join with other small employers to advocate for greater flexibility in the marketplace, no new mandates, and innovative solutions to the small-business health insurance crisis.

Eminent Domain
With the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Kelo v. New London, the possibility now exists for state and local governments to abuse their eminent domain powers for the purpose of "economic development" that results in a transfer of your private property to another private entity. Now business owners face the growing threat of cities, towns, and municipalities using the tool of eminent domain for private development. Join with other small-business owners to rally for private property rights and a statewide eminent domain process that treats small employers fairly.
